An educational campaign entitled “Diabetes: Protect your family!” was held on 14 November - World Diabetes Day

On November 14, 2019, an educational campaign entitled “Diabetes: Protect Your Family!” was held on Park Boulevard in cooperation with the Public Health and Reforms Center of the Ministry of Health (PHRC), the Republican Center of Endocrinology, Azerbaijan Diabetes League and Novo Nordisk. The campaign dedicated to the World Diabetes Day was opened by the entry words of Sabina Babazade, Head of the Project Coordination Department. She said that the proposal to celebrate this day was put forward by the International Diabetes Federation and the World Health Organization in 1991 to prevent the rise of diabetes in the world and in accordance with the resolution adopted by the UN General Assembly adopted in 2006, November 14 is celebrated as World Diabetes Day every year beginning from 2007: “The purpose of this day is to inform the public about the causes, symptoms and complications of the disease, as the fight against diabetes mellitus is one of the most urgent issues of the world health at the moment”. Talking of large-scale measures to prevent non-communicable diseases, including diabetes in our country, S.Babazade emphasized the educational works done by PHRC for promoting physical activity and healthy lifestyle among the population, especially schoolchildren.

Yegana Sultanova, Chairman of Azerbaijan Diabetes League, physician-endocrinologist of the Republican Center of Endocrinology said that the main goal of the educational campaign is to draw public’s attention to the prevention of diabetes mellitus and the importance of healthy nutrition for diabetics. Nigar Ismayilova, Manager of the Health Communication Department of PHRC, informed the campaign participants about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and physical activity, noting that malnutrition leads to obesity, which directly contributes to the development of diabetes mellitus.

During the campaign specialists of the Republican Center of Endocrinology checked the blood sugar level in the interested persons and provided them with necessary advices based on the results. The amount of carbohydrate and glucose in the products used daily was brought to the public's attention in the healthy nutrition corner. At the same time, there was an educational quiz and the winners were awarded during the campaign.
